Evening Grosbeaks near Ottawa: early January 2023

Toronto has a parking lot at Wilket Creek Park which has many birdfeeders. Even ducks and the occasional woodchuck visit it.

I found something similar about a 20 minute drive from downtown Ottawa and visited it recently on a very rainy morning.

There were fewer species than at Wilket during my visit. No cardinals, red-bellied woodpeckers, juncos or nuthatches. But, the most exciting find was exciting indeed! A pair of female evening grosbeaks. I seldom see these gorgeous, large goldfinch-looking birds. Previously, here is only photo that I have ever taken:

I did much better today!

Bird fans might enjoy checking out ON FeederWatch Cam on YouTube to see both Evening and Pine Grosbeaks “live” from the comfort of home. I believe the feeder camera is located in Manitouwadge, ON. Another good site is Cornell FeederWatch Cam from Sapsucker Woods in upstate New York.
And then switch to watching nest cams in the spring.
