Barred Owl: Jan. 18, 2023

The Barred Owl is one of the most familiar owls throughout much of Ontario. While other owls have yellow or orange eyes, the Barred Owl has dark eyes. Except for the streaked breast, most of its plumage is barred (as its name suggests), barred with dark brown on buffy gray background.

I remember the first time I saw a Barred Owl, on a hike. I didn’t know what kind it was, and looked it up. Since then, I have seen others, and it’s always a thrill!

thanks for the Birder Murder series referral. Link to scribd doesn’t work (& is $13/mo after 1st month) as it’s a British title, as divulged by ref to DI lead character, but Toronto Public Library has the series, both as online & book in hand. Cheers, b
