The Barred Owl is one of the most familiar owls throughout much of Ontario. While other owls have yellow or orange eyes, the Barred Owl has dark eyes. Except for the streaked breast, most of its plumage is barred (as its name suggests), barred with dark brown on buffy gray background.

I remember the first time I saw a Barred Owl, on a hike. I didn’t know what kind it was, and looked it up. Since then, I have seen others, and it’s always a thrill!
