Female is More Ornate in This Bird Species: August 2022

In many bird species, the male is much more colourful than the female:

Wood Ducks
Northern Cardinals
Hooded Mergansers
American Goldfinch (male)
American Goldfinch (female)

Belted Kingfishers are different. The female has a rusty patch on the side which the male does not.

NATURE POETRY

this is the garden: colours come and go,

frail azures fluttering from night’s outer wing

strong silent greens serenely lingering,

absolute lights like baths of golden snow.         – e. e. cummings (1894ā€“1962)
