Cape Horn

The mythic Cape Horn is located on an island at the southernmost tip of South America. Cruise ships sometimes pass by here on their return to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Antarctica is completely surrounded by sea and, south of South America, this 1000 km wide  region is called the Drake Passage. The wind is usually from west to east and, in stormy weather, this made it very, very difficult for sailing ships to sail west of Cape Horn. The lives of over 10,000 sailors have been lost here.
