When I am out walking in the woods, I occasionally encounter a great mass of something on the forest floor.
Here we see it a bit closer.
These are the remnants of spruce cones.
They have been taken apart carefully by Red Squirrels. Sometimes you see a work in progress.
Here are the Before Red Squirrel \ After Red Squirrel cones.
The squirrels find and eat the seeds within.
Here is a closer look.
Human beings do something similar with artichokes.
It seems that, after a hearty meal, the squirrel can enter one of these burrows for a nap.
There is another restaurant near by. The Red Squirrel can munch away on top and keep an eye out from predators.
