My grandfather, Dr. J. Murray Speirs, had a long career as an Ornithologist and a Naturalist.
Here is a quote from his biography taken from his book Birds of Ontario:
As a curious six-year old, J. Murray Speirs spotted a small bird which he was able with the aid of a bird-book to identify as a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
I think of this every time I see a Ruby-crown and we had a good look at one this morning.
