My grandparents took me to Thickson’s woods, just south of Whitby when I was a child. It has the reputation of being a good place to see birds up close.
On this overcast morning, I visited it once again and was quickly greeted by a Black-capped Chickadee. In some locations such as Ashbridge’s Bay or High Park, Chickadees are used to being fed by hand. I wasn’t sure about Thickson’s Woods but had brought some feed along just in case.
As you can see, about half a dozen Chickadees were delighted to see me:
I held the camera in one hand and the seed in the other:
The trails here were very, very icy:
I was very happy to have my new “grippers.
WINTER QUOTES:
“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” ― Lewis Carroll,
Miles Hearn
