Pitcher-plant is a carnivorous herbaceous plant with leaves which form long, narrow water-filled traps.
These pitchers have downward-pointing hairs that force insects down into the water where they drown and are digested by the plant.
The leaves are 10 β 20 cm long.
Pitcher-plant grows in bogs, fens, coniferous swamps and sandy calcareous shoreline meadows.
The flower petals are a rich maroon.
They are nodding and about 5 β 7 cm across.
The plant can grow to 50 cm in height.
Pitcher-plant is the floral emblem of Newfoundland.
Pitcher-plant flowers in late spring and summer.
