Jackdaws are members of the crow family. They are found across Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.
They are similar in size to pigeons.
Jackdaws are gregarious and very vocal.
They live in small groups in farmland, open woodland, on coastal cliffs and in urban settings. I saw and heard them daily during a two week visit to Ireland.
Omnivorous feeders, Jackdaws eat plant material, invertebrates and food waste from urban areas.
The bird makes a sound something like JACK and “daw” is the archaic word for this species.
They are essentially a blackish bird with grey around the neck.
